Lodging Assistance Options
Comprehensive care includes making sure that you have travel accommodations during treatments and visits. We help arrange lodging assistance through several American Cancer Society programs and by applying our own local hotel partnerships. We will help you identify the best fit depending on your needs – travel expense will not stand in the way of cutting-edge treatment.
American Cancer Society Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge
The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge program provides a free home away from home for cancer patients and their caregivers. The Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge, comprised of 33 private rooms, is just one mile away from the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and includes:
- Private guest rooms and bathrooms
- Fully equipped community kitchens for food storage and preparation
- Gathering areas/great rooms and community dining rooms
- Free laundry rooms stocked with supplies
- Outdoor, reflection, or meditation spaces
- A library and/or resource rooms
- TVs and computer access
- Dedicated volunteers helping to ensure a comfortable stay for our guests and frequently cook/provide meals
Patients staying at a Hope Lodge must be in active cancer treatment and permanently reside more than 40 miles away from their cancer treatment center. Our patient navigators can make a referral on your behalf.

American Cancer Society Extended Stay America Program
The American Cancer Society (ACS) also offers up to 40 nights of free lodging (in 5 consecutive-day increments) at a nearby Extended Stay America per diagnosis or recurrence. The ACS can also arrange discounts for Extended Stay America locations nationwide.
American Cancer Society Patient Lodging Grants Program
The American Cancer Society recently awarded funds to 77 health systems across the country to lessen the burden of lodging costs for cancer patients. UAB Medicine was the only health system in Alabama awarded these funds, an option to relieve the burden of travel expenses for those who need lifesaving treatments.

UAB Medicine has exclusive partnerships with Courtyard Birmingham Downtown at UAB and the Hilton Birmingham at UAB.
