Jorge Cortes, M.D., is the Chief of Hematology for the Division of Hematology and Oncology at UAB and the Deputy Director for the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center.

Cortes is a distinguished physician-scientist with a career spanning over three decades, including more than 20 years at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he was the Deputy Chair of the Department of Leukemia. Prior to joining UAB, he served as the Director of the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University, where he held the Cecil F. Whitaker Jr., GRA Eminent Scholar Chair in Cancer. Cortes also has authored over 1,200 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and abstracts, and he served as principal investigator on numerous clinical trials that have shaped the standard of care in leukemia and other hematologic malignancies.

Cortes’s research focuses on the management of hematologic malignancies and related disorders. This includes clinical research with new drug development for leukemias, particularly AML, MDS, and CML, and research related to patient-related outcomes, prognostic factors, and biomarkers. Internationally recognized for his leadership, scholarship, and clinical expertise, Cortes is well known for his commitment to mentorship, having guided countless fellows, residents, and students throughout his career.
