Urologic Cancer Survivorship Program
At the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center, our Urologic Cancer Survivorship Program offers complete, personalized care to address the long‑term effects of urologic cancer and its treatment. This includes physical, emotional, and functional concerns.
We support your overall well‑being and help ensure a smooth transition from active treatment to long‑term health. Your customized care plan will include close follow‑up and coordination with your primary care provider.
Our physicians, nurses, clinical care coordinators, and research staff work together to:
- Manage treatment-related side effects
- Reduce or prevent long-term side effects
- Monitor for signs of the cancer returning
- Help you access any clinical trials or other research opportunities you may qualify for
During each visit, we focus on any issues affecting your quality of life, such as emotional well‑being, energy levels, and sexual health. We address your questions and concerns, perform a thorough physical examination, and share the results with your primary care provider to improve the care you receive.
The Urologic Cancer Survivorship Program is located within the Men’s Health Clinic at UAB Hospital-Highlands. It is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Managing treatment-related side effects
Treatment for urologic cancer can cause side effects that are ongoing or develop over time. We help manage side effects in the following areas:
- Erectile dysfunction
- Changes in orgasm
- Decreased desire
- Hot flashes
- Mood changes
- Tiredness
- Loss of muscle mass or weight gain
- Leakage or incontinence
- Issues with frequency and/or urgency
- Low energy or chronic fatigue
- Sleep problems
- Reduced strength and endurance
- Anxiety and/or depression
- Stress related to survivorship
- Access to counseling and support services
Ongoing survivorship care
Cancer care is only one part of your overall health journey. We support your long-term health through personalized care planning and coordination, along with preventive care and routine health screenings. Even if you’ve received cancer treatment elsewhere, we offer follow-up care and second opinions. When you seek care at a federally designated Comprehensive Cancer Center like the O’Neal Cancer Center, it helps ensure that you have access to the full range of urologic cancer expertise and treatment options.
