UAB O’Neal Cancer Center and Infirmary Health Partnership Enhances Women’s Cancer Care

Katie Miller, M.D., is helping bring advanced gynecologic cancer care closer to home for women along Alabama’s Gulf Coast through a partnership between the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center and Infirmary Health. As both a gynecologic oncologist with Infirmary Surgical Specialists and a member of the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center network, Miller provides specialized care for women diagnosed with ovarian, cervical, uterine, vulvar, and other gynecologic cancers.

A graduate of the UAB Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program, Miller completed her fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before returning to Alabama to serve patients across the Gulf Coast region. Her expertise includes complex cancer surgery, minimally invasive procedures, chemotherapy management, and participation in multidisciplinary cancer care.

Expanding Women’s Cancer Care

The partnership between the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center’s Gynecologic Oncology Program and Infirmary Health represents a meaningful expansion of women’s cancer care services across Alabama, strengthening access to specialized oncology expertise closer to where patients live while maintaining the academic depth and innovation of a leading comprehensive cancer center.

At the center of this collaboration is the shared goal of improving outcomes for women facing gynecologic cancers through coordinated care, expanded clinical access, and seamless referral pathways. By extending the reach of UAB’s gynecologic oncology expertise into the Infirmary Health system, patients in coastal Alabama and surrounding communities gain improved access to subspecialty care without the added burden of traveling long distances for every stage of treatment.

Warner Huh, M.D., chair of the UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and senior scientist at the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center, stated, “This expansion is designed not only to improve access but also to elevate the continuity of care. Patients evaluated within the Infirmary Health system can be rapidly connected to subspecialty gynecologic oncology services, multidisciplinary tumor boards, and supportive care resources through the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center network.”

Combining Cancer Care Strengths

The collaboration also reflects a broader shift in cancer care delivery across the region, prioritizing integration between academic medical centers and community health systems. This model allows patients to benefit from the best of both worlds: the innovations, research infrastructure, and clinical trial access of Alabama’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center paired with both the accessibility and the continuity of a regional health system.
