Faculty, physicians, scientists, and trainees from the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center joined oncology leaders from around the world at the 2026 (ASCO) Annual Meeting.

Faculty and researchers from the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will join oncology professionals from around the world at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, taking place May 29 - June 2 in Chicago.

UAB's partnership with Infirmary Health offers patients around the southeast aceess to UAB-trained physicians, clinical trials, and all of the resources of the UAB O'Neal Cancer Center.

Andrea Comba, Ph.D., recently secured the V Foundation’s V Scholar Award through the support of her colleagues at the O’Neal Cancer Center.

The UAB O’Neal Cancer Center is pleased to announce the latest O’Neal Invests grant awards. In this cycle, three grants received the award, including two funded by the BCRFA and by the Children’s of Alabama Hope Fund, respectively.

Jorge Cortes, M.D. will join the Division of Hematology and Oncology as Chief of Hematology; furthermore, Cortes will serve as the Deputy Director of the O'Neal Cancer Center. Similarly, Mehmet Akce, M.D., will serve as Interim Chief of Oncology.

Becker’s Hospital Review recognized the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center on its 2025 list of “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs.” This annual list honors national leaders in cancer prevention, treatment, research, and innovation.

In June 2025, the UAB O’Neal Cancer Center earned accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC), making UAB one of only two centers in Alabama to hold this designation.

UAB Medicine has been recognized by the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation (TCAF) as a Testicular Cancer Center of Excellence – the only one in the Southeast. This distinction is awarded to programs that provide complete, multispecialty care for testicular cancer.

The Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Clinic at UAB Hospital has been named a Center of Excellence by the Cure HHT foundation. HHT is an uncommon but serious genetic disease that prevents blood vessels from developing properly.

UAB Hospital has received a 2023 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ from Healthgrades, which recognizes hospitals that provide an overall positive patient experience during hospital stays. UAB Hospital was one of 445 U.S. hospitals recognized and one of only three in Alabama.
