Remembering Albert F. LoBuglio, M.D.
The UAB O’Neal Cancer Center remembers the late Albert F. LoBuglio, M.D. During his life, LoBuglio served as the director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, and his pioneering work as an oncologist, a researcher, and a mentor shaped the center into the nationally recognized cancer research institution it is today.
LoBuglio joined UAB in 1983 after being recruited from the University of Michigan, and he served as director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center from 1983 to 2004. During his tenure, he helped recruit outstanding faculty, expand research funding, strengthened translational cancer research, and built collaborative programs that connected laboratory discoveries with patient care.
As a nationally recognized expert in hematology, oncology, and immunological therapeutics, LoBuglio made significant contributions to understanding and treating cancer. His scientific work included research into immune responses to cancer and the development of antibody-based approaches to cancer treatment. LoBuglio’s contributions extended beyond his own research, as he was widely recognized for his commitment to mentoring the next generation of physicians and scientists.
His influence at UAB continues to be felt today. The Albert F. LoBuglio Distinguished Faculty Award recognizes O’Neal Cancer Center faculty members for outstanding contributions to cancer research, and the Albert and Rita LoBuglio Board Room was dedicated in honor of him and his late wife, Rita.
LoBuglio’s legacy is reflected not only in the programs and people he helped develop but also in the culture of collaboration, scientific discovery, and patient-centered care that continues to define the O’Neal Cancer Center.
The O’Neal Cancer Center extends its condolences to Dr. LoBuglio’s family; friends; colleagues; and the many physicians, scientists, trainees, and patients whose lives were touched by his remarkable career.
