The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB works with a variety of internal and external funding sources and mechanisms to support cancer research projects conducted by trainees and junior faculty.
American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant
The American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant provides funds to initiate promising new laboratory-based research projects to obtain preliminary results that facilitate successful competition for national research grants. Only cancer-related projects will be considered.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants should have a current junior faculty appointment at UAB for no more than six years.
- United States citizenship is not required, but applicants should have a valid U.S. visa for the duration of the pilot grant.
- The applicant should not have received significant extramural funding such as an RO1, DOD or Komen grants. Training grants are allowed.

O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center Pilot Awards support exemplary scientific research in cancer. All areas of research, from basic mechanisms to translational projects, to clinical therapeutic intervention to public health and epidemiology, are encouraged. This award provides funds to initiate promising new research projects to obtain preliminary results that facilitate successful competition for national research grants.

Richard A. Elkus, M.D., Pilot Grant Program in Pancreatic Cancer Research
Richard A. Elkus, M.D., Pilot Grant Program in Pancreatic Cancer Research supports exemplary scientific research in pancreatic cancer. All areas of research, from basic mechanisms to translational projects, to clinical therapeutic intervention to public health and epidemiology, are encouraged. This award provides funds to initiate promising new research projects to obtain preliminary results that facilitate successful competition for national research grants. The Elkus family established the grant program in honor of Dr. Richard Elkus, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2005

O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and UAB Center for AIDS Research Pilot Program
The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and UAB Center for AIDS Research Pilot Program funds collaborative research projects in the area of Non-AIDS Defining Cancers in aging individuals with HIV.
Details
Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Clinical outcomes research — links between NADC and anti-retroviral therapy (ART) regimens, efficacy of cancer therapies in the aging HIV population, role of obesity/energetics, microbiome in NADC incidence and outcomes, co-infection with HPV or Hepatitis B
- Basic biology – role in cancer incidence, progression, detection and prevention in aging HIV population.

O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center NCTN-LAPS Program Translational Research Initiative Awards
The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center NCTN-LAPS Program Translational Research Initiative Awards fund innovative research proposals focused on translational investigations of pathways, potential drug targets and biomarkers in human tumor samples. The award aims to promote new collaborations between basic and clinical investigators, based on the analysis of human biological samples obtained from patients, in support of novel translational research programs in drug discovery, clinically relevant pathway interactions or biomarkers of therapeutic response.

- This program is open to UAB faculty at any rank who are leading an independent research program.
Funding
- Awards in the amount of $5000 to $10,000 each are available to support the molecular analysis of patient-derived samples obtained through banked tumor samples and/or associated with clinical trials. Preference is given to collaborations between basic and clinical/translational faculty.

The Young Supporters Board of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center New Faculty Development Award in Cancer Research provides funds to initiate promising new laboratory-based research projects to obtain preliminary results that facilitate successful competition for national research grants.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant should have a current junior faculty appointment at UAB for no more than 3 years.
- Applicant should not have received significant extramural funding such as an RO1, DOD or Komen, V-Foundation grant. Training grants are allowed.
The following early stage or small research grants or for the indicated training, infrastructure, and career awards do not disqualify potential applicants:
- Pathway to Independence Award-Research Phase (R00), Small Grant (R03), Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15), Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21), Research Education Grants (R25, R90, RL9, RL5), Clinical Trial Planning Grant (R34), Dissertation Award (R36), Small Business Technology Transfer Grant-Phase I (R41, UT1), Small Business Innovation Research Grant-Phase I (R43, U43), Shannon Award (R55), NIH High Priority, Short-Term Project Award (R56), Competitive Research Pilot Projects (SC2, SC3), Resource Access Award (X01)
- Training-Related and Mentored Career Awards : All Fellowships (F awards), all individual and institutional career awards (K awards) , Loan repayment contracts (L30, L32, L40, L50, L60) , all training grants (T32, T34, T35, T90, D43), Instrumentation, Construction, Education, Health Disparity Endowment Grants, or Meeting Awards : G07, G08, G11, G13, G20, R13, S10, S15, S21, S22.
- Note regarding transitional grants: Researchers with grants that combine a smaller initial award that transition without further competition to a second phase supported by a substantial, independent research grant will become ineligible at the point of transition to the larger award. This includes combined, transitional awards like the R21/R33, SBIR/STTR Fast-Track (R42, UT2, R44, U44), UH2/UH3.
