The importance of seeing a gyn-oncologist for women’s cancers

gyn-oncologist speaking to female patient

A woman’s OB/GYN doctor can provide care for most female health issues at every stage of life. But when it comes to cancer, it’s important to see a gynecologic oncologist, or “gyn-onc”.

A gyn-onc is an OB/GYN doctor with special training in diagnosing and treating cancers of the female reproductive system. They have experience with surgery, chemotherapy, and supportive care, and research shows that outcomes for women’s cancers are better for those treated by a gyn-onc. This is true for surgical success as well as long-term survival rates.

When to see a gyn-onc

You should see a gyn-onc if you have a strong history of cancer in your family. This is especially true if a family member has had breast, ovarian, colon, or endometrial (uterine) cancer. A gyn-onc can evaluate your risk and decide if you are a good candidate for surgery to reduce that risk, genetic counseling and/or testing to better understand your risk, or close monitoring to watch for any possible cancer signs.

If you’ve already been diagnosed with a precancerous condition or any form of gynecologic cancer, your primary care or OB/GYN doctor may recommend a gyn-onc. You can also make an appointment on your own, if your insurance plan permits it.
