Francine Walton is a program director in the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach & Engagement. In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked Walton to share how her mother has shaped her perspective on the cancer journey, including the importance of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.

The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB is pleased to announce that Timiya S. Nolan, Ph.D., APRN-CNP, ANP-BC, has been named Associate Director for Community Outreach & Engagement effective July 1, 2023. In this role, she will be responsible for overseeing the Office of Community Outreach & Engagement, which fosters transdisciplinary cancer research along with bi-directional communication and collaboration with communities statewide.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is partnering with Bibb Medical Center to provide care to rural patients. The partnership will provide screening and diagnostic modalities for colon and stomach cancers, in addition to reflux disease and swallowing difficulty.

The Office of Community Outreach & Engagement at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center celebrates its silver anniversary this year after 25 years of providing health advocacy and cancer education to communities across the state and the South as a whole.

In April 2019, the outreach office officially changed its name to become the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. This is not just a name change, but a whole new approach of how to reach the community in an effective manner.
